Service Tax Registration Mela

A special Service Tax Registration Mela 2008 was organised by the Service Tax Commissionerate, Bangalore on August 21-22, 2008 to issue on-the-sport service tax registration certificates. According to an official communication received from the Commissionerate, a majority of the service providers who have been recently included under the service tax net, had not obtained the service tax registration and hence the authorities decided to go on a special drive to educate the service providers. With effect from May 16, 2008, the following new services were brought under the service tax net:

* IT software services provided by any person in business or commerce.

* Services provided by an insurer in relation to management of investments, under Unit Linked Insurance Plan (ULIP) Scheme.

* Services provided by a recognized stock exchange in relation to assisting, regulating or controlling the business of buying, selling or dealing in securities and including trading, processing, clearing and settlement of transactions in securities.

* Services provided by a recognized/registered association in relation to assisting, regulating or controlling the business of the sale or purchase of any goods or onwards contracts, including services provided in relation to trading, processing, clearing and settlement of transactions in goods or forward contracts.
