World's first Sanskrit musical

This Pop group says Thathasthu

The world’s first sanskrit pop group - ‘maye’ made a smashing debut at the world music day programme at Alliance Francaise de Bangalore on Friday, June 20, with their album “The European airs of Muthuswamy Dikshitar”.

The album traces the history of Sri Dikshitar, one of the holy trinity of carnatic music composers, who was influenced two hundred and fifty years ago by the marching band music of the British Cantonments. He has set well crafted sanskrit devotional verse to the music of Irish ditties and other such delightful melodies . The band presented these ‘carnatic’ compositions  rendering them in harmony backed by contemporary instrumentation.

The group trained at Guruskool under Vidushi Mythili Ananthraman. Music was presented by Gopal Navale of the world music band Esperanto.

The performers included child prodigy Bhumika (9 yrs), and band stars  Mythili  (9 yrs), Varsha (7 yrs) & Sridevi (8 yrs) accompanied by Nitesh on keys, Gopal on mandolin and Michael Sorensen on xylophone.
