5 grains of sugar - @ Ranga Shankara!
Five Grains of Sugar, originally written and directed in Hindi as Shakkar ke Paanch Daane by Manav Kaul, has since been performed to great critical acclaim across the country. Shakkar ke Paanch Daane was invited to perform at the Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival in 2005 where the theme of the festival was Indian Playwrights. Following this festival, Ranga Shankara, supported by the SRTT and Adishakti in Pondicherry initiated a Translation workshop where Indian Language plays were translated into English to make it more accessible to a wider audience. Shakkar ke Paanch Daane was translated into Five Grains of Sugar by Arshia Sattar during this workshop. Nirmala Ravindran who was a participant at this workshop has directed the play in English.
Synopsis
Five Grains of Sugar recounts the personal journey of Rajkumar - a young man from small town India, where nothing spectacular ever happens. The play revolves around the choices he makes, especially when pushed into a corner. Rajkumar goes through his everyday life with idyllic charm and is surrounded by characters who are as irrepressible; A failed poet who insists on refining his taste, a mother with a strong taste for bloody and gory films, an old Gandhian who is still reliving his single meeting with Gandhiji, a stunning hero from school and an invisible friend. Rajkumar's is a universal journey filled with delightful events and speckled with life-changing experiences.
