"Hair" Rising Play
Synopsis:
HAIR looks at the darker side of the world of the fairytale Rapunzel. The story is well known - a baby girl is imprisoned in a tower by a wicked witch. She grows up to be a beautiful young woman with long, flowing hair. Things look pretty hopeless for her until one day, a handsome young prince walks into her life. What the medium of the fairytale doesn't tell us is how these characters spoke, behaved, and most of all, what made them do the things they did. HAIR attempts to explore these questions, leading up to an ending that is not quite happily ever after.
Director
Ajay Krishnan started working in theatre while he was at St Joseph's College in Bangalore. He and some friends started a theatre group which produced three plays in the three years they were in college. These productions had shows in Bangalore, and also traveled to Chennai, Kolkata and Ninasam. For Harlequin Entertainment he wrote Lines About a Bullet, a play about two nameless, sex-less, nation-less soldiers conversing in the middle of a war. After graduating with a B.Sc he founded Harami Theatre with two friends in Bangalore. Their first production Butter and Mashed Banana was very well received, winning awards at Thespo 2005, a youth theatre festival, and later getting invited to the Prithvi Festival among others. In 2006, he attended a playwright's workshop in Mumbai, organised by the Royal Court. For the resultant festival Writer's Bloc 2007 he wrote and directed Excavators, which received mixed responses.
Evam Youth Forum
As an initiative towards creating a vibrant and thriving culture of theatre among youth across India, The Company Theatre set up the "Evam Youth Forum" in May 2006. The Evam Youth Forum seeks to bring together talented, committed and hard-working young artistes and provide them with opportunities and a platform to explore their art further and produce exciting new theatre. Although it is currently under the aegis of The Company Theatre, the Forum aims to develop as a completely autonomous body with regard to its administration and programming, led by its own artistic director.
