Now, Common Law Test!

Law students can breathe easy. There will be no more multiple entrance exams for law admissions. All the seven law universities have finally agreed to scrap the earlier set-up and put in place a single Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). A decision to this effect was taken by the core committee and implementation committee of the universities which met recently under the aegis of the University Grants Commission.

The first CLAT will be conducted by the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore on May 11, with its vice-chancellor, A. Jayagovind as the convener of this year's test. The CLAT will also be held in 12 other centres across the country.

Besides the National Law Schools at Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bhopal, Raipur, Jodhpur and Gandhinagar, the CLAT will be conducted at Chennai, Delhi, Kochi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Guwahati, Patna, Jaipur, Lucknow, Bhubaneswar, Shillong and Jammu.

Candidates appearing for the CLAT will have to answer a two-hour question paper based on objective questions format, covering English, general knowledge, basic maths, besides legal and logical reasoning.
Full details regarding the seven law varsities, courses on offer and the eligibility criteria, will be available on CLAT's official website www.clat.ac.in, on Jan 25.

The CLAT was the result of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed in the Supreme Court against multiple law entrance exams being conducted by the universities. While the case was being heard in the court, the Union HRD Ministry sounded out the seven law universities who gave their consent to the formation of a single CLAT. The signatories to the MoU signed are : NSLIU, Bangalore, NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, National Law Institute University, Bhopal, West Bengal National University of Juridicial Sciences, Kolkata, National Law University, Jodhpur, Hidayuthullah National Law University, Raipur and the Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar.
