It's always a *happy new year'!
Is there anything more phony than greeting people a "happy new year"? There is no better time to be brutally truthful than the first day of a new year. And so, let us face it: How do we KNOW the new year is going to be happy? Wishful thinking? Not a bad thing at all, for 'tis no crime to be positive. In fact, when the whole world is drooling over "positive thinkers", if you don't wish people you meet 'a happy new year', you are fit to be certified as an anti-social!
But, the point is we don't know, we cannot know, and yet we spread the good word - not only among friends and well-wishers, which is perfectly understandable and legit, but also among our sworn enemies. Love thy enemy? Far from it, it is the height of hypocrisy.
So, every new year, the whole world wears a "positive thinker's' cap and like an incorrigible drunk, parrots the happy-new-year phrase to every Tom, Dick and Harry, known, and unknown, loved and loathed.

It's crazy, but never the less amazing that people are ready to go delirious in joy, when Father Time merely turns a new leaf, and for no other reason. We feel like we have won a lottery, that tomorrow is truly another day, that yesterday is powerless, and the future is ours for the asking. In a word, we are transformed, while nothing, quite literally nothing, has happened between the time the clock struck twelve in the night of Dec 31st, and the time it belted out twelve chimes. But at that instant, that moment, we fee! invincible, a sense of power, over ourselves and over the world.
Sounds terribly corny and phony! But who cares? Especially, when it makes you feel like you are on top of everything. Here's wishing all of you and your families, a really, really Happy new year! |
