Welcoming Year 2K8 with Stars
A compilation of articles and treatises written on Girish Kasaravalli and his contribution to world cinema, edited by Manu Chakravarthy would be released during the Festival.
Want to welcome Year 2008 with Lights! Camera! Action! with an international canvas, a renowned audience, in the presence of national and international stars? Bangalore’s Suchitra Academy, the hub of all film lovers, will screen 110 films, including landmark films from 41 countries, at the week-long 2nd Bengalooru International Film Festival from January 3rd 2008.
Warm-up Seminar: While the Festival itself would be a multi-dimensional event, there will be a warm-up one - day seminar on Saturday, December 15, to herald the arrival of the Festival. The seminar is being jointly organised by Suchitra Cinema and Cultural Academy and the Karnataka Journalism and Communication Teachers Association at the Shaswathi auditorium, NMKRV College for Women, in Jayanagar.
The theme of the Seminar is “The Changing Trends in Commercial Cinema”. K V R Tagore, Commissioner of Information, will inaugurate the Seminar at 10 am and leading film producer K C N Chandrashekar, former President of Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, will present the keynote address. Eminent film maker and Festival Director Girish Kasaravalli will introduce the Seminar and Vidyashankar, President, Suchitra Film Society and Executive Director of the Festival, will preside. Leading film makers including Jayamala, Hamsalekha, T S Nagabharana, Nagathihalli Chandrashekar, Kavitha Lankesh, Rathnaja, Prakash, B Suresh, Prakash Belawadi and K M Chaitanya, many leading film critics and journalists and teachers and students of cinema, journalism and communication from all over the State will participate in the day long Seminar and participate in the discussions. Serious - minded filmgoers are welcome to attend the seminar.
Warm-up Workshop: A script writing workshop will be held jointly by LACE (A group of cineastes & cinematographers) and Suchitra Film Society at their premises, 36, 9th Main, Banashankari II Stage, Bangalore between 28th and 30th December 2007 by Prof. Arun Gupta, Senior Faculty, Film & Video, National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.
Inaugural ceremony: The Festival’s inauguration at the Chowdaiah Memorial Hall on the evening of Thursday, January 3, 2008 would be a gala, star-studded event in which the celebrated Kathak dancer and guru Maya Rao and her students would present a 20-minute ballet, on the evolution of music and dance in Indian cinema.
The focus of the Festival would be on some remarkable films made in countries like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Senegal, Cambodia, Vietnam, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco etc, where film making is still in a nascent state, whereas mainline countries which have established a strong tradition in film making like Germany, Poland, France, Iran, Australia, Hungary, Spain, Canada, USA, South Africa, China, Sweden, Italy, Bulgaria, Norway, Croatia, Turkey. Finland, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Japan, India and others would be represented by the cream of films made by them. Both contemporary films and classics would contribute to the festival a sound and multi- dimensional content.
Eminent film maker, Girish Kasaravalli, is the Festival Director, and H N Narahari Rao, Vice - President of the Federation of Film Societies of India, the Programme Director, Mr. V. N. Subba Rao, Chairman, Dr. Vijaya, Associate Chairperson of the Organising Committee, Executive Director of the Festival Mr. N. Vidyashankar, and Ms Sushma Veerappa, Documentary film.
Delegates: Not less than 10 foreign delegates and over two dozen Indian delegates among them some internationally known directors, artistes and technicians-would participate in the festival on invitation. Nearly 2000 delegate passes are being issued to cineastes and students of cinema, journalism and communication and members of the film industry. Delegate fee for the entire festival would be Rs. 500 /-, while members of the film societies and students of film institutes and journalism and communication courses would be offered passes at a concessional rate of Rs. 300 /-. Delegate passes would be issued from December 20th, 2007 at the Suchitra Film Society Office in Banashankari 2nd Stage (Ph: 26711785). Tribute: Five celebrated films edited by the well-known editor Suresh Urs from Karnataka, in Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi and Sinhalese would be screened in an exclusive Tribute section. He will also be honoured on the occasion.
Indian Panorama: In the Indian Panorama section, over a dozen films made recently in several Indian languages would be screened and artistes, directors and technicians of the films will be honoured. The Kannada films in the section would be “Daatu”, “Kada Beladingalu” and “Moggina Jade”.
Documentaries: The special feature of the festival would be an exclusive section of documentaries in which some outstanding documentaries from several countries would be screened and discussed. Both contemporary documentaries and classics have been handpicked. There would also be a retrospective of documentaries by the eminent Australian film maker Dennis Rourke. This section is being curated by the well-known documentary maker, Sushma Veerappa. There would also workshop on documentaries organized by Sarathy in association with Vikalp.
LCD Exhn: A unique moving exhibition in LCD format, comprising clips from and basic information on every single Kannada film which has won a national award since 1954, would be beamed through a network of plasma screens at the festival venue. Dr. Vijaya and Mr. Prashanth Pandit are putting the exhibition together.
Book release: 2007 being the birth of centenary year of M R Vittal, a biography of the well-known film director who has contributed to Kannada cinema with landmark films like “Nanda Deepa”, “Hannele Chigirudaaga”, “Miss Leelavathi”, “Professor Hutchuraya”, “Yeradu Mukha”, etc., written by veteran journalist and film historian N S Sridhar Murthy, is being released during the festival. The book also critically analyses the films directed by the late master.
Another book being released during the festival is a compilation of articles and treatises written on Girish Kasaravalli and his contribution to world cinema, edited by the film scholar, Manu Chakravarthy.
About Suchitra
Suchitra, now 37 years old, is a cultural landmark in Bangalore. Suchitra film society is the flagship and the Suchitra Cinema and Cultural Academy has under its umbrella the society, Suchitra Kalakendra and Suchitra Bal Jagat, all cut out for specific activities concerning cinema, theatre and performing arts, A large number of film festivals representing the cream of creative cinema from all over the world have been connected so far under the aegis of Suchitra. A number of seminars, symposia, talks, workshops and competitions make up the spectrum of Suchitra’s activities.
Suchitra has held two international film festivals so far-one on a pilot basis in 2003 and another full-fledged event in 2006 at the Tribhuvan, Kailash and Movieland cinemas in Bangalore. The 2006 festival was a huge success and a trend-setter and motivated Suchitra to make it an annual event, each festival bigger and better than the previous one.
