State Congress sings.

Krishna, Nee Begane Baaro

With elections in the near horizon, is the State Congress head hunting for a new leader to lead it to the polls? Speculation is rife that the present chief Mallikarjun Kharge will be eased out by the High Command and be replaced with some Vokkaliga leader, preferably SM Krishna, the Maharashtra Governor.

For some time now, the return of SM Krishna to active politics has engaged political gossip mongers, and the time seems right now for his imminent return. Being a Vokkaliga, Krishna is ideally placed to challenge the hegemony of Deve Gowda on the Vokkaliga votes. Krishna also has a sizable following among the party cadres, and as former CM, had whipped up some support for himself among the middle class voters. Particularly in Bangalore, he is perceived as being pro-IT and development. As CM, he had brought in a lot of high profile and efficient people to head civic agencies like the BDA which was turned around by Jayakar Jerome.

While most of the senior Congress leaders like Kharge and Dharam Singh refused to say anything about Krishna's homecoming, the High Command appears to be moving towards the inevitable return of the former poster-boy of the State unit. Compared to the present leadership, Krishna is more media savvy, articulate and a darling of the IT community. While all this may work in his favour, it may well be a case of too little, too late, given the current state of the Congress.
