A unique dance form that'll inspire confidence

Like father, like daughter. While Dad Ajit Kaikini, with wife Sadhna Kaikini is obsessed about infusing confidence in the youth, daughter Shoma Kaikini is doing the same thing in a different way. Building confidence through dance. Even for the Kaikinis who believe in doing their own thing, in their own way, it is a trend setter. You have heard of light classical music, Shoma now brings to you a taste of light classical dance. A hybrid dance form that is a blend of the old and the new, classical (mostly Kathak) dance performed to old/new Hindi and Kannada songs!

Already, Shoma Kaikini has made waves in Mumbai. As director of Nrityanidhi Institute, she has wowed audiences and won critical praise. Now, Buoyancee will present Dhwani, a show directed and choreographed by Shoma, the proceeds of which will go to support the various activities of Buoyancee. Says Ajit Kaikini, "The show will have intricately choreographed dances that will leave the audience in a trance."

What's the connection between confidence and dance? Explains Shoma Kaikini, the originator of this unique concept. "Nrithyanidhi's unique blend of Indian dance forms not only nurtures individuals but stirs their soul too. Buoyancee which works on developing confidence in the youth is ideally placed to partner with Nrit hyanidhi."

Shoma Kaikini has been passionate about dance, ever since she was seven. She studied Bharata  natyam in Bangalore under the tutelage of Sri Ashok Kumar for nine years, and began giving performances and choreographing at a tender age of ten for those who were twice her age!  At Christ College where she studied, she got exposed to a variety of dance forms, viz. jazz, contemporary, Indian folk dance as well as western free style dancing.  By the time she left college, she had already chore ographed over two hundred shows! After nine years of Bharatanatyam, Shoma returned to her first love, Kathak, and shifted to Mumbai, where she came under the fold of Guru Nandita Puri, of Jaipur Gharana. After that, there was no looking back, and today, has gained enough confidence to create a dance form all her own.

Shoma Kaikini's Dhwani is set to make a splash on Nov 3, at Ambedkar Bhavan. For sponsorship and other details, contact Buoyancee on 2654 9009, 2654 8972.
