Vishnu @ book fair!

Sahasa Simha Vishnuvardhan as an ardent, serious book lover? No, this is not his next role in reel life, but an aspect of his real self in real life. At the book fair in Palace Grounds, the veteran Kannada star was seen visiting stall after stall earlier this week, with co-actor BK Shivaram in tow. Clad in his trademark whites, Vishnuvardhan looked dapper and uber cool mixing easily with the hordes of fans and media persons who tailed him all the way.

His latest flick, Mathaad Mathaad Mallige, may not have tanked at the box office, though it did win critical acclaim, but Vishnu looked at peace with himself, and seemed to be enjoying every moment of his time in the world of books. Vishnu spent nearly two hours browsing books of all kinds, a rarity for an actor, and smilingly signed autographs, and exchanged pleasantries with his fans.

There were several light hearted moments, like when a vendor thrust a Telugu book at him, and he replied, with a smile, in Telugu, "Can only speak, can't read." At a stall displaying books on Mahatma Gandhi, he picked up a book on the Mahatma with a visible sense of reverence.

Later, talking to press persons, Vishnu said books fairs were the best way to spread knowledge to all sections of people, and not just a business opportunity for book sellers. Book lovers the world over looked forward to such fairs, with almost a religious sense of devotion, he said.

Echoing similar thoughts, actor Shivaram said such fairs should be extended to towns and villages and held regularly, to disseminate knowledge among a wider section of people. The duo also expressed their appreciation for the organizers's initiative in giving wider coverage to Kannada books and Kannada literature.
