Organ Transplantation

The Indian Society of Organ Transplantation organised a debate on Ethical and legal issues of organ transplantation on Oct 5, at the Hotel Chancery Pavilion. Dr. Ashok Kirpalani, Head of Department of Nephrology at the Grant Medical College and Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals, Mumbai and Dr. K.C. Reddy, Chief Executive Officer and Chief of the Urology Department, Devaki Hospital, Chennai chaired the debate. A distinguished panel took part in the debate viz. Ms. Rani Jethmalani, ace lawyer and transplant patient,  Dr. H .S. Ballal, Director, Manipal Institute of Nephrology and Urology, Bangalore, Dr. Gabriel. M. Danovitch, Living Donor Transplantation- United States Model, Medical Director, Kidney Transplant Program, UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles, California, Dr. Harsh Jauhari- Indian Model, Chairperson Department of Renal Transplantation, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, Dr. Mitra Mahdavi Mazdeh- Iran Model, Director of the Management Center of Transplantation and Special Diseases, Ministry of Health, Tehran, Iran.

Indian Society of Organ Transplantation (ISOT) was formed 2 decades ago in Madurai by a small group of Renal Physicians with the sole objective of getting together transplant professionals (transplant surgeons, physicians, scientists, social workers) as a group to share their knowledge and help the patients suffering from end stage organ failure with hope in the form of Organ Transplantation. The ISOT which started as a handful of doctors now has hundreds of professionals in its organisation and meets every year to discuss and deliberate various scientific, legal and social aspects of transplantation.
