Colour your eyes….Blue, Green, Hazel…& many more

By Rajesh Wadhwa

Today, looking good has become an important ingredient in a package deal of being confident and feeling good. This festive season put your best face forward. Driven by this logic, people today are flocking to dermatologist for a quick-fix beauty treatment. Be it botox shots to ironing out laugh lines or lightening skin tones, people are just about spending a packet-from Rs 2,000 to 20,000-to look good for the nights out. And it’s not just women; men too are trooping in for the beauty shots.

The new face of fashion in today’s fashion conscious world is that of colour contact lenses. The onus is on eye care professionals to deliver high quality colored contact lenses in a package that enhances the wearer’s appearance and vision. Colored contact lenses are now available in a wide range of colours to create an amazing to completely enhancing the colour of your existing eyes. Many of these lenses are available in unpowered option as well  as for those having a spectacle power.

Colored lenses that change the color of the eyes are primarily of two kinds:

1) For very light colored eyes: Color enhancers. These take a part of the color and pattern from the wearer’s eyes and contribute to the final color partly them selves.

2)For dark colored eyes: Op aques. These lenses make a more drastic change to the final color of the eye
Both the above-mentioned categories come with or without a bordering ring.

These lenses can be conventional (same pair used for several months) or frequent replacement (disposables).  It is scientifically proven fact that “faster we throw away a soft lens, healthier it is”. So it is a wise decision to have these colored contact lenses in disposable category.

Here are five Dos and Don’ts to help you with colored contact lenses.

1) Colored contact lenses are same material as regular contact lenses. So, be sure that they are professionally fitted and not bought over the counter

2) The care regimen is same as for regular contact lenses. They need to be cleaned and disinfected as directed by your eye-care practitioner

3) Never swap lenses with friends. Human tears can transmit infections from one person to other through contact lenses (have you ever swapped a tooth-brush?)

4) Whenever cosmetics are to be used, it is the lens first and make-up later. This means, insert the lens first and wear the make-up later. For removal also, lens first and make-up later. The choice of make-up should be “water based make-ups” and to avoid the creamy make-ups.

5) Proper hygiene is important. Wash hands before touching the lens. Never touch tap water to your lenses. Therefore, never take bath or splash water in the eyes while wearing the lenses.
Colored contact lenses are a statement today. Enjoy the colors of life with colors of these lenses but follow the rules. Remember, we can not just buy a car and drive it without training or without following the traffic rules.
