Jayanagar tense after Ragigudda attack

Preliminary investigations by the city police into the attack on Karunanidhi's daughter Selvi's house in Jayanagar 9th Block (South End C Cross, near Ragigudda temple) has not yielded any evidence about the involvement of the Sangh Parivar. According to south police, ten Bajrang Dal activists have been rounded up on suspicions, but the Sangh Parivar organizations have denied any role in the attack on the Tamil Nadu CM's daughter's residence as well as the torching of the TN-bound bus in which two persons died of burns.
BJP spokesman Suresh Kumar said on Thursday the chiefs of Hindu organizations like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal had denied their role in the incidents. "These organizations would never indulge in such inhuman activities like torching buses," he claimed adding that the police should not buckle down to pressure and try to paint them as culprits. "Let the police do a professional job and arrest the real culprits," he said.

The attacks followed immediately after Karunanidhi fueled the Ram Sethu controversy with his insensitive remarks on Lord Ram, questioning his existence and by most reckoning, the veteran DMK leader had crossed the Laxman Rekha of not offending the religious sentiments of the people. "Is there any proof that Ramar lived? They say he built the Ram Sethu bridge. Was he a civil engineer? If so, which engineering college did he go to?", he is reported to have remarked, adding a new twist to the controversy. When BJP leader LK Advani demanded that he apologise to the Hindus for his offensive remarks, he chose to pour salt over the wounds, with his widely reported remarks that Valmiki had written that Rama was a drunkard, and he did not saying that (!).

Karunanidhi's outbursts may well be an extension of Tamil politics. His arch enemy, Jayalalithaa has filed a petition in the supreme court seeking protection of the Ram Sethu. In all probability, this must have triggered off such a caustic reaction from him. However, this has left a bitter taste in Karnataka and has ended up as threat to the law and order.

Jayanagar tense: Uneasy calm prevails in Jayanagar and surroundings, in the aftermath of the Ragigudda attack, with police bundobast beefed up in most of the main roads. While the security guard Gopalakrishna and domestic help Meenamma at Selvi's residence are in a state of shock, the TN CM's daughter was out of town at the time attack, which perhaps was a godsend. One can only imagine the repercussions if she had been in her residence at the time of the attack. "Perhaps, Sri Rama served us from a potential catastrophe," says a local resident, tongue in cheek. Many of the locals feel though that the politicians are back to their own game of fishing in troubled waters - the common man's security be damned.

Hey Ram, save us from these Ravans. When it comes to disturbing peace, they are all totally united - caste, creed, religion, no bar. The question we have to ask our ourselves is: will the ordinary citizen ever unite like them, and against these Ravans?
