When you are visiting a dentist, the one thing you cannot wear, is a smile. But as you wait for the horror moment, try to switch off and enjoy the luxury and comfort of the reclining chair. And you will confess: They are licensed to make you smile, when, especially, you need it the most.

Licensed to make you smile, is a neat way to describe the visionary protagonist behind the company that makes all those apparently “scary” equipments that you dread at the dentist. Dr Subashchandra Shetty, dental surgeon turned entrepreneur, has earned his spurs well enough, having elicited a “million” smiles along the way, from many satisfied customers, across the globe. And his company, is appropriately named, Confident Dental Equipments Ltd. Today, it is one of the largest manufacturing units in India, and even in Asia.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Started by Dr Subhashchandra Shetty in 1980, Confident Dental Equipments Ltd, became a private limited company eight years later, and in 1997, it became a Deemed Public Company.

Twenty seven years ago, dental science and treatment was in its nascent stages in India. Young Subhash cut his teeth in this rather esoteric and untested field then. Academically brilliant and ambitious though he was, there was absolutely no inkling about his entrepreneurial skills. But Destiny, prodded by his unwavering commitment to excellence, a vision for building a lasting enterprise, and a passion for improving the general health of the hoi polloi, played its part and gave wing to his dreams. Today, Confident Dental equipments are a benchmark by which other similar products are measured in the industry.

Reflecting its established presence and stature in the market, the company is today, Member of the Electronic & Computer Software Export Promotion Council, New Delhi. CII, Indian Trade Promotion Organisation, New Delhi and FKCCI, Bangalore.

Its clientele list reads like a who’s who of corporates and includes some of the biggest names from the defence, government and private sector. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Confident Dental is the preferred choice of most of the premier medical colleges in the country.

Says Subhash, “Our products are world class and the company’s commitment and concern for people has brought it to the number one position.

The company also provides class technicians to cater to any defects in the equipments, in any part of the country. Even at remote areas, well trained resident technicians with mobile facility can be contacted at any time for quality service.

PRODUCT PROFILE
Some of the equipments designed with the latest technology are dental chairs, dental lights, operation tables, etc. The operation tables are meant for cardio thoracic and neuron-surgery and certain special surgical procedures. They provide smooth, easy and accurate positioning. The table is fully maneuverable by fingertip operated touch keys on a remote control hand switch while the hospital bed and the home care bed is most ideal for patients suffering from long illness. They are sturdy and well constructed on 4 legs and vibration freehand control switches, operating at 12VDC, and provide easy control of all movements.
Subhash’s passion – and legitimate – pride in creating cutting edge dental equipments, has fueled his vision and given it concrete shape. “In old age, people want sight to view nature and dentures to eat some food,” he points out. “As you grow old, your gums get weakened and this results in improper fixation of dentures. But with implant dentures based on latest technology, old people will not suffer from any gum problems.”

A FUTURISTIC VISION
His vision for the future is suitably grand: A dental hospital in Bangalore (in Rajajinagar) envisioned as a state-of-art, hi-tech, and one of its kind in the country. And then, a chain of hospitals all over the country, which will offer all kinds of treatment matching the best in the world.

On governmental initiatives for healthcare, Dr Subhash has a radical suggestion to make. “Instead of a pension scheme for the old, the government should open rehab centers for people who don’t have a “neat” mouth,” he opines. These rehab centers will help the people to eat better and thus improve their quality of life. Of what use is money, if you cannot enjoy good health? To live we need food, and to eat food we need a nice set of teeth”. Going beyond making suggestions, Subhash plans to open a rehab center for people suffering from teeth ailments.
