Govt to confiscate Big Bazar at K'gala?

The landmark Big Bazar complex in Koramangala is constructed on government land, as are the buildings housing Global, Uco Bank and other companies. This was unearthed by the Joint House Committee (JHC) of the Legislature, probing the alleged encroachment of government lands in Bangalore urban district.

The committee members including chairman and MLA AT Ramaswamy visited Koramangala and surroundings and found that government land worth Rs 350 crore had been encroached by several VVIPs. The committee said the Big Bazar complex was recently purchased by BJP MLC Janardhan Reddy, and it would recommend to the government to confiscate the complex. However, Mr Ramaswamy clarified that the committee was yet to verify the full facts behind the ownership of the building. According to reports, Janardhan Reddy had purchased the complex for Rs 33 crores.

After an inspection of the buildings and consultation with GBCC officials, Mr Ramaswamy observed that documents had been forged to sell the land. "Land allotment was not completed owing to litigation. The land sharks exploited the circumstances and forged the documents to sell the land."

According to committee members, the landowners who had constructed these buildings illegally, got a monthly rent of Rs 6-8 crore.

Mr Janardhan Reddy was recently in the news for accusing chief minister HD Kumaraswamy of receiving kickbacks from the mining industry.
