Residents want ban on HTVs enforced

Jayanagar 5th Block residents staged a protest on Thursday evening before Traffic Inspector Basanth Kumar against the entry of heavy vehicles specially BMTC buses, lorries and private buses coming from JP Nagar 6th Phase, from 24th Main towards 4th Block, Jayanagar via Raghavendra Swamy temple.

"The HTVs are supposed to take diversion from JP Nagar Circle towards left and enter from the parallel road, i.e. 9th Main, 5th Block, but most of the vehicles flout this rule with impunity," observed Bhaskar, Secretary of 5th Block Residents Welfare Association.

Responding to the complaints, the traffic police rounded up some of the BMTC drivers violating the rule and slapped a penalty of Rs 500/- on them. Signboards announcing the ban of HTVs near JP Nagar Circle were also put up to ensure strict compliance in the future.

The residents also urged the Traffic Inspector to earmark the 10,000 sq ft BDA land situated next to the Raghavendra temple as a parking slot. The land under question is under litigation, but till such time the court resolves the dispute, it can be used for parking purpose by obtaining permission from the appropriate authorities, observed Bhaskar. Presently, people park their vehicles on the narrow road in and around the temple. He also said the BMP should consider chopping off the unwanted, big trees that are obstructing smooth flow of traffic and widen the road further.
