R.K.Makhija

Saviour of the Jobless Poor

The Makhija-Rotary Vocational Training Institute has introduced a six-month hospitality course with tie-ups with reputed service providers, hotels, restaurants, clubs and apartments. The course is open to all, including SSLC/PUC dropouts and costs only Rs 3,000/-, which says the promoter, Sri RK Makhija, “can be recovered in the first month after completion of the course”.  A philanthropist, Sri Makhija started the institute with the aim of “empowering the poor and the underprivileged and enable them to lead a life of dignity”. Starting with just 3 students and one faculty in Feb 2000, the institute today has succeeded in providing gainful employment to more than 2,000 poor students.

It was a chance meeting with Swami Chinmayananda in Kolar that inspired Makhija to think of doing something concrete for the poor, impoverished youth. He then dreamt of starting an institute that would provide low cost job skills in the shortest time to the poor, unemployed, less educated people, irrespective of age.

Over the years, a lot of great personalities and like-minded people helped realize his dream, acknowledges Makhija, like Veerendra Heggade of Dharmasthala, Wing Commander Krishnamurthy, Geeta and KP Bhaskar. Mr Makhija has now handed over the mantle of MRI to his successor Rotarian Mahesh Parikh.
