Premaanjali Trust
Beacon of hope for the homeless
When the heart and mind come together, anything is possible. A group of like-minded individuals shared a passion about reaching out to the homeless and thus was born, Premaanjali. Nearly two decades later, they are providing permanent shelter to homeless and destitute children. The children study in nearby schools. Besides providing basic needs like food, shelter, clothing, education etc., the focus is on holistic development of the children. Through innovative methods the trustees try to provide a ‘near home atmosphere.’ That is why the center is called a ‘home.’ Apart from scientific evaluation of individual potential by experts to bring out the best in each child, the following are a few subtle factors that go into creating a ‘near home atmosphere’:
• Home stay programme’, an occasion for the children to stay with trustees at their homes, during vacations.
• To bring in a sense of equality, trustees and their families bring food (home-cooked, preferably) and join for the meal with the inmates during meetings and celebrations, so that the little ones develop confidence when they mingle with the children of trustees.
• Picnics, overnight outings, educational film shows, exposure to art etc., provide insight into all spheres of life.
•Foster care program: Here, families willing to take foster care of the children are identified. Wards are entrusted to these parents and their financial needs are taken care of by the Trust.
• Distance Sponsorship: Deserving children who are almost in the drop out stage in schools for want of funds are provided with schooling, medical and other expenses so that they can continue their education.
