It's a Sad Day Today

By Deepak M. Rao

As one more of us leaves, little do spirits help
Long silent walks with the night for company does little too
An itch in the fingertip bites one back to the evil called reality
It's a Sad Day Today
As the night absorbs the speeding trucks and lorries
Their headlights beaming, wheels screeching
I stand alone, straining far into the total darkness
Trying to hear the crushing of the little dried leaves under my feet
The trees talk ghostly stories, make noises
The wind howls its jeremiad into my ears
Small insects, hitherto unnoticed buzz past my nose
Stars shine down, their light, tonight, un-reaching
It's a sad night, one tied down to the world of reality by pangs of separation
Of one from many and many from one
A branch above sways, threatening a lonely nest of fall
To the mirth called reality, to where I stand
In days of yore, there used to be laughter,
And silent nights sometimes, but cheer filled the air
What great moments they were, how wonderful
Today is another day, another time
