Zipping along the road to development

The second developmental boom will soon hit Bangalore, with the completion of the International airport at Devenahalli.

The Eastern and Northern parts of Bangalore are fast reflecting the international aspirations of Silicon City. The churnings were first seen a decade ago when Hosur and Whitefield Road surroundings played host to a few ambitious private developers. They took a calculated risk of developing large scale apartment projects which set the trend to this culture which was then new to Bangalore.

The IT sector played a crucial role in bringing a whole lot of young High Net Worth Individuals from all over India that triggered a massive housing shortage. Over the decade this trend has gathered strength almost creating a housing deficiency although apartments have sprung up in the spaces available.

In fact the development caught the government by surprise leaving all infrastructure and civic amenities in a fractured mode.

It is already a past story, but the second developmental boom will soon be approaching us, with the completion of the International airport at Devenahalli.

Bangalore East which bore the brunt of the IT boom is now giving North Bangalore sleepless nights. Land prices are soaring and land developers have already made a head start in gulping whatever is available. Now there are enough takers but not sellers. Landowners hope to reap a harvest with every waiting moment.
Road connectivity to the new airport from different parts of Bangalore is on the anvil and the link from Electronic City is the key to the next revolution. The road that passes through the outer space, a few kilometers from the outer ring road will be a smooth drive and adjourning areas of the planned road is bussing with real estate activities. All this means more hardship to the city dwellers in terms of affordability of land for residential purpose.

The common man sees no chance to make Bangalore their home. The regularization process that the government intends to put in place by July-07 has very little for the commoner, while, the developer community is too strong for any kind of adverse effect that may come in the government proposal .

The North Bangalore fever is real, but needs to take few lessons from the making of the concrete jungle that the East is now. Laying emphasis on government action is not the answer, but more hinges on environment-loving citizens. People's movement led by environmentalists should be allowed to take shape. Bangalore cannot be allowed to die for the sake of development. The cruel fact is, all modern thinking does not end up in positive results. The warning signals should be heeded and should not be brushed aside by pro-developmentalists.
