One-way goes .somewhat

After much dillydallying the Bangalore Traffic Police have finally decided to do away with the one way rule in some of the major roads and throw them open for two-way traffic. The roads are Richmond Road, Residency Road and St Marks Road. The move follows a report submitted by an expert team which conducted a traffic study in the backdrop of rising traffic bottlenecks, which suggested that the one-way rule be reversed.

This will be a major relief for people using link roads viz. Museum Road, Rest House Road, Lavelle Road, Convent Road and Magarath Road. Traffic is also now expected to be smoother on the Richmond Road flyover.

Much before the expert team submitted its report, the commuting public had repeatedly complained that the one way rule had been a failure in managing the flow of traffic but there were few takers for their complaints, as the traffic police was enamoured of the idea of one-way rule, inspired by its success in Singapore. At the time, the authorities dreamt of making Bangalore into a Singapore. Now, it appears the dream has come full circle. But let us hope we are not back to square one. Meaning, uncontrollable chaos, whether one-way or not. Right now, there are 30 vehicles on the city's roads, as per an official estimate, which is three times more than what the roads are equipped to handle. So expect more storms in the road ahead.
