Await the monsoon fury for an answer.
By Keshu Namboodiri

All action remains ineffective as the silt is removed and thrown on the roads and when the rains come they flow back into the storm water drains rendering the efforts useless.

When summer gets hotter, you can bet that a spot of rain will follow, that's Bangalore! The April showers have come as welcome relief to the scorching heat, but at the same time, they have also signaled dangerous water logging in several low-lying areas. Residents, who remember the horrors they went through last year, are now looking with some desperation to the initiatives and the precautions taken by the Brihat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to prevent a repeat of what happened earlier. The Corporation has been asserting that adequate measures have been taken in the last few years to plan and implement an improved drainage system that would take the drain water into the four outlets of Bangalore.

In the last few days moderate to some heavy showers flooded low lying areas and has sent shock waves among residents. The Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and BMP Commissioner Jayaraj made a spot inspection of the affected areas and reassured that all steps will be taken to ensure safety during monsoons. Groups of workers have swung into action with the help of JVCs to clear up clogged drains, but as residents point out, all action remains ineffective as the silt is removed and thrown on the roads and when the rains come they flow back into the storm water drains rendering the efforts useless.

The main problem remains in identification of causes of blockage and scientific measures to remove them. It remains to be seen whether the officials will be able to get the better of the monsoon fury this time round.
A survey of various affected areas during the recent rains suggest that although some work has been done to make way for free flow of storm water, it has not been done in a planned way so as to achieve sustainable results. The Corporation needs much more full proof systems even if it were to be costly projects. The city is crying out for action that is permanent and sustainable.

On our part, the residents need to get themselves better organized, activate emergency services and take their representatives into confidence. For the BMP and the government, the acid test will be how the low lying areas respond to the rains. Keep your fingers crossed.
