Bangalore is fast becoming a city of foodies. After the boom in retail food chains and malls, it's now time to welcome India's first certified organic food store. Era Organic opened its first outlet in the city at Dollars Colony on Sunday, World Earth Day. Sri HR Jayaram, an organic farmer and the brainchild behind this project, admitted that organic food was costlier than other food but there were immense health benefits to the consumer. He also assured the consumers that his store would also strive its most to provide organic food at affordable rates. The store will also serve as a platform for consumers to interact directly with farmers and vice versa.

The store stocks items of everyday use such as provisions, vegetables, fruits, baby food, jams, pickles, in addition to natural cosmetics like soaps, candles, incense, clothes and natural dye and literature on organic farming and environment.

Apart from health benefits, another reason why people should prefer organic food is because it gives great taste as it has more vitamins and trace elements, and is not treated with noxious chemicals, unlike inorganic food.

Earlier, a number of organic farmers and agri-experts were felicitated during the inaugural such as Prof Narasimhappa, Chukki Nanjundaswami, Narayan Reddy, Muthalik Desai, Barama Goudar, AP Chandrashekar, Krishna Prasad and founder of Green Foundation, Vanaja Ramprasad, and Joint Director of Horticulture, Dr Ramakrishna.
