Thayappanahalli Oorahabba in J'nagar

Thousands gathered for the three-day colorful Thayappanahalli Oorahabba festival that concluded in Jayanagar on April 25. The organizers provided free meals to the devotees, irrespective of religion and included both vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare. The free meal was sponsored by Sri Chandrashekar, general secretary, State Congress, general secretary of Rajyokshetra community, and president of Annapoorneshwari Seva Samithi. Former Minister and Jayanagar MLA Ramalinga Reddy was the chief guest.

The festival began at the Gangamman temple at 4th '' Block, Jayanagar, followed with a procession on the second. The concluding day ended with a grand Pallaki, with various drums and dolls. Sri Obala Raju, Kodandarau, Lakshmanraju of Gangamma temple, lent their support to the organisers.

According to legend, the Thayappanahalli festival is being celebrated for more than 100 years. In those days, villagers from nearby villages, viz. Puttanahalli, Marenahalli, Siddapura, Thayappanahalli, Yediyur and Kanakanpalya used to jointly host this festival. During the festival, villagers pray for the Rain God and bountiful harvest and all round health for all. Nowadays, people from neighbouring areas assemble together and pray for Annamma. This year, the Oorahabba also coincided with the first anniversary celebrations of Sri Annapoorneshwari temple.
