No Sex Education in Schools: CM

It's now official. The state government has shut the lid on sex education in schools. Making the government's stand crystal clear, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said a firm No to sex education being part of the school curriculum this year, while addressing a gathering of students earlier this week.

"The proposed module prepared by NACO and Unicef is not in good taste and would hurt the people's sentiments," he observed.

Interestingly, the Primary & Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti has said that a final decision is yet to be taken on the issue.

Under the programme aimed to control AIDS, it was planned to impart sex education to students in the age group of 15-17.

A majority of participants vehemently opposed introducing sex education at school-level. "Arousing interest about sex in young minds and asking them to refrain from sexual activity will lead to several problems," an expert asserted. However, noted gynaecologist Dr Kamini Rao was in favour of exposing the students to sex education, though she suggested that objectionable and explicit pictures could be removed if they were a cause for concern.
