Ryder Cup star McGinley confirms for Hero Honda Indian Open golf

Ryder Cup star and multiple winner on the European Tour, Paul McGinley has confirmed his participation in the Hero Honda Indian Open next month. The Irishman who will turn 43 a week after the Indian Open will be looking for an early birthday present, as he tees up at the Delhi Golf Club alongside Asia and India’s star-studded field in the $ 1,25 million event to be held from Dec 2 to 5, 2010.

The 47th edition of the Indian Open, which has grown from a $ 300,000 event to a $ 1.25 million in the six years that it has been sponsored by Hero Honda returns to the Delhi Golf Club after a gap of one year.

Defending champion Chinnaswamy Muniyappa and India’s leading global stars including Arjun Atwal, winner on PGA Tour, Jeev Milkha Singh, Jyoti Randhawa, Shiv Kapur, Anirban Lahiri are among those who have confirmed their participation.

McGinley, who has been a member of winning European team three times in Ryder Cup – 2002, 2004 and 2006 – was also the vice-captain of the team, which won earlier this year at Celtic Manor.

The immensely likeable McGinley also won the 1997 World Cup golf with Padraig Harrington, who went to the same school at McGinley. Four-time winner on the European Tour, including the 2005 Volvo Masters, McGinley also finished third on the European Tour Order of Merit the same year and once figured in the top-20 of world golf rankings.

McGinley has an enviable record in team events for Europe. He has been a part of their winning team four times in Ryder Cup, once as a non-playing vice-captain; three times in Seve Trophy, including once as non-playing captain in 2009; and has been member of Europe’s winning team twice in the Royal Trophy played between Asia and Europe.
