In historical perspective, Madras was always a great cultural centre- combining strong elements of colonialism and various forms of art. This show attempts to celebrate these various facets of the city and to honour the great MADRAS SCHOOL OF ART which was established in the mid 19th century and has flourished ever since. What set them apart from the rest was their readiness to reconcile the freedom of modernity to the discipline of tradition, their commitment to a new ethos and a new sensibility which make it possible for them to evolve a new significant artistic expression with Dravidian feel and accent.
This show reflects the current trend of the art movement in Madras (now called as Chennai) and is the first in an ongoing series of similar exhibitions surveying the art scene in South –profiling the aspirations, attitudes, creativities, sensibilities & achievements of artists who deserve to be brought to the notice of as large and discerning a public as possible. Going beyond commercial, SAFION dedicates a portion of the money proceeds from its activities for the social causes and charities in the society.
