Chandrashekar Azad Remembered

BV Ramesh and KS Nagaraj the conveners of Rashtra Premi Geleyara Balaga, Jayanagar organized a function on July 23 at 9th Block, Jayanagar to pay homage to the freedom fighter Sri. Chandrashekar Azad on his 105th year birth anniversary. The function was chaired by Jayanagar MLA BN Vijayakumar along with Jayanagar Corporators, leaders and patriots viz. CK Ramamurthy, N. Nagaraju, B. Somashekar, Muni Sanjeevappa, P. Vijayakumar , Taffazull Ahamed, BJP Minority leader, GK Mahantesh, Managing Trustee,  Samarthanam Trust for Disabled,  Guruprasad, Talented Kannada Film Director  and many locals.
The event kicked off with band and trumpets from the Nalanda English School children who took out a procession with placards of Azaad.

Addressing the gathering KS Nagaraj, President RPGB, he urged the public and the BBMP to refer to the Azaad Nagar located at Chamarajpet as “Chandrashekar Azaad Nagar”  which was named after him. Similarly the JP Nagar area should be called as Jayaprakashnagar, he said. Chandrashekhar Azad was a great Indian freedom fighter and his fierce patriotism and courage inspired others of his generation to enter freedom movement. Chandrasekhar Azad was the mentor of Bhagat Singh, another great freedom fighter, and along with Bhagat Singh he is considered as one of the greatest revolutionaries that India has produced, he observed.

Chandrashekhar Azad was a terror for British police. He was on their hit list and the British police badly wanted to capture him dead or alive. On February 27, 1931 Chandrashekhar Azad met two of his comrades at the Alfred Park Allah bad. He was betrayed by an informer who had informed the British police. The police surrounded the park and ordered Chandrashekhar Azad to surrender. Chandrashekhar Azad fought alone valiantly and killed three policemen. But finding himself surrounded and seeing no route for escape, Chandrashekhar Azad shot himself. Thus he kept his pledge of not being caught alive.

Chandrashekhar Azad was deeply troubled by the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in Amritsar in 1919. In 1921, when Mahatma Gandhi launched Non-Cooperation movement, Chandrasekhar Azad actively participated in revolutionary activities. He received his first punishment at the age of fifteen.
Subsequently Sri. BN Vijayakuamr spoke of some great leaders who fought for our country including Mahatma Ganhi and said that Mahatma Gasndhi wanted to dissolve Congress after getting freedom, but later it turned out to be a dissolution of Gandhisim itself, he remarked.

Today corruption and crime had become a universal fact of daily life, because of the degeneration of the present netas, and if it continues like this we will definitely be ruled by terrorists only  he said.
Vijaykumar  appreciated the initiative taken by BV Ramesh to pay homage great freedom fighters of the past and affirmed that this would be continued in a big way in the future.

Guruprasad, Director proudly recalled the statements used by Chandra Shekhar when He was caught while indulging in revolutionary activities. When the magistrate asked him his name, he said "Azad" (meaning free). Chandrashekhar Azad was sentenced to fifteen lashes. With each stroke of the whip the young Chandrasekhar shouted "Bharat Mata Ki Jai". From then on Chandrashekhar assumed the title of Azad and came to be known as Chandrashekhar Azad. Chandrashekhar Azad vowed that he would never be arrested by the British police and would die as free man.

Later freedom fighter Sri. Ethiraj, who closely walked with Sri Azad then was felicitated with a Mysore peta and a shawl by BN Vijayakumar for his contribution to the nation.
This was followed by sweets distribution to the school children by the area Corporator Sri. Munisanjeevappa.
