Why Sex is Back in the Closet
What do modern young couples want? The easy answer is: Wealth, and more wealth. The surprise is, sex is way down in the list of wants. The reason for this is rather complicated, and certainly not a good sign for their emotional well-being.
Today’s young couples have more money than they need, but somewhere down the line of working too hard to accumulate wealth, they also accumulate an emotional baggage, leading to depression, anxiety and a lack of self-esteem.
Nowadays, the youth want to assert their rights and make their own choices. So it is not surprising to see youngsters out of college, tying the marital knot. Girls reach puberty faster, and so the age gap in marriages has become lopsided. Working couples are now the trend and not an exception as they used to be. And in marriages where the woman earns more than the husband, marital conflicts are frequently encountered. People marry not on the basis of mutual compatibility, but on the barometer of “success” and prosperity it will bring. A surgeon marries his\her classmate, it could be a gynecologist, to start a hospital. Software engineers tie the know so that they don’t have to explain their late hours. Their mantra: No children till we settle down. But in an age where we live and earn for paying back one EMI after another, where’s the time left for marriage, for each other? Little, and a majority of even this is spent in mundane living. Quality time for each other, is at a bare minimum.
Also, at work and home, the work is taken for granted and the emotional misers who surround us and fail to recognize and appreciate, cause an emotional vacuum, which becomes a part of everybody’s life. Frustration looms large and people only wait for a chance to vent them. Many go to bed without being able to share their emotions, feelings of worthlessness, failures, desires, sufferings, loneliness etc. Pent up emotions lead to improper sex or no sex at all.
Sex was never a taboo in the Indian Society as seen in temple sculptures and the ancient books. Taboos were introduced through religion to save our women from foreign invaders. However, gradually, women came to be used as sex objects for gratification by man, thoughtless about her pleasures. Sex is responsible for the release of a lot of chemicals responsible for a feeling of well-being. It is curative and gives the feeling of being wanted and being of worth. It is a substitute for many medicines and binds people with chords of romance, gratitude and love. Women have more than a casual right to seek pleasure in sex. With all the developments and growth taking place, one thing, which many of us are in dark in this mystery of sex.
