Bengaluru Walk-A-Thon 2009 The Green Way
"Dignity and Justice for all of us" is the theme given by the UN for The World
Disabled Day 2009, which is observed on 6th of December. This year marks the 61st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, making the commemoration of World Disabled Day all the more relevant.
With 10% of the world's population being differently abled, and a majority of this population living in the developing countries, creating awareness & sensitizing the public about this issue becomes very imperative.
Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled is planning to mark this day by organizing the Great Walkathon yet again, a feat it has been regularly conducting since 2005, with the help of corporates and patrons.
The event will be held at Sri Kanteerava Stadium on the 6th of December, 2009.
This year we present this mega "Bengaluru Walkathon 2009 - the green way" in which we address disability issues and eco-friendly living.
Apart from creating a disabled friendly society, we also recognize that an eco-friendly society is indispensable for a sustaining living. Disability is closely related to the way of life and interaction with the environment.
The event also endeavors to be a zero waste event in its nature.
We anticipate around 30000 participants to take part in this grand event, from all walks of life.
People from around 300 institutions would be coming to express their solidarity towards the people with disabilities which includes corporate, schools, colleges.
The participants include Ministers, renowned Celebrities from Sports and Film Industry, well known writers, CEOs / Directors of Corporate and non corporate backgrounds, educationists, academicians, NGOs, School and College going children and volunteers from corporate and non corporate sectors
The Bengaluru Walk-a-thon will be followed by a Mega Musical Show at Sree Kanteerava Stadium from 6 pm onwards and the presence of eminent singers and artists will make the event more colorful
The organizers appeal to corporate houses, businesses, schools, colleges, and individuals to contribute generously to make the event a big success. All contributions above Rs.250,000 will be acknowledged publicly on the day of the Walkathon. IT exemption is available for all donations under section 80G.
The organisers' estimate of the cost of organizing this event is Rs 32.20 lac, including transportation cost for 7,500 disabled, publicity, ambulance, medical care & first aid, food for physically challenged & volunteers, T-Shirts for participants, etc.
