An orientation programme for high school teachers to improve their core competencies was organized earlier this week by BN Vijayakumar, Jayanagar MLA. The seminar was held under the aegis of Abhivruddigagi of RV Institute of Management, Jayanagar. 10 school teachers attended the two-day program which dwelt on improving the quality of education and securing good results in the SSLC exam especially in Government Schools and aided schools which comes under Jayanagar constituency.
The key speakers were Mr. Sameera Simha, Mr.Srikantaswamy, Christ University, Dr. Seshamurthy, Dean of Vijaya Computers, and Mr. TV Raju, Director of RV Institute of Management, and other resource persons Mr. Ambarani and Sri. Narasimhaiyanagar MK.
The subjects covered were Physics, Chemistry, Social Studies, Mathematics with a resource person from each subject.

The speakers focused on how to uplift SSLC students of Govt schools and help them score better in the exam. They declared that with proper skill sets, the government school teachers could be no less than private schools. Overall 80 teachers from MES School, Sarakki Govt. High School, BHS School, Holy Christ School, Indira Priyadarshini School, Ragigudda High School, Byrasandra Corporation School, MEW School, Sahakari Vidaya Kendriya School, Arasu Colony Govt. School benefited from the program.
Dr. T.V. Raju, Director, R.V. Institute of Management and Co-Ordinator for this project, lauded the Jayanagar MLA's initiative and said it showed his concern for the students of Government schools. "Vijayakumar has not only been proactive in development works but also has great interest in the field of education and wants to uplift the government school students as well as bring out the hidden talents among the governments school teachers, as most of the top most bureaucrats, IAS and IPS officers come from Governments schools," he said.
He also pointed out that the performance of the students of Govt/Aided Schools generally is not satisfactory.  He also welcomed Dr. K. Sameer Simha, Retd.Lecturer of Vijaya Teachers College, Dr. Srikantaswamy, Dean of Education Research Department, Christ University, Dr. K. Shesha Murthy, Head of Computer Department, Vijaya Junior College, Jayanagar, Sri. Gundappa, Retd. Head Master.
Mr. B.N. Vijaya Kumar said soon after the Assembly election in 2008 he visited  several schools in the Jayanagar  constituency and was moved to see the pathetic condition  of the schools with regard to lack of infrastructure.  There were several causes for the poor performance of the students, it may be due to the environment in which the students are studying, but parents throng to admit their wards to prestigious schools after seeing the working condition of these schools.  He said unless proper remedial steps are not taken at once the performance of students in 10th Std in the coming academic year 2010 may deteriorate. After much  thought and pondering over the matter he arranged for a meeting with  Dr. S. Srikantaswamy, Dr. T.V. Raju, Dr. K.S. Sameer Simha, three months ago to find ways and means to address this issue.
He also said unless we motivate the teachers and change the scenario the results would continue to show a downward trend. This meeting was arranged to get the feedback from the teachers and head masters and to find out solutions to come out of the crises. Every parent expects better results from their children, parents' contribution in this direction is essential.  He sought co-operation of all teachers for improving the result in the schools, he said that once this project is implemented in schools of Jayanagar constituency the same would be adopted in other areas also.  He also quoted an example of MES School Jayanagar, 4th Block where the results of 10th Std used to be from 90% to 95% and now it has dropped down to  70%, if the same trend continuous it may even drop to 50% which should be averted and improved upon. He assured all the assistance and co-operation from his office to enable the teachers to achieve the goal and to make Jayanagar a model education block.
He also appreciated Muralimohan and Rudresh for their coordination in making this event a success.
Dr. Sameer Simha said the students of Jayanagar, Basavanagudi, Malleswaram had gone to become IT professionals mainly because of the role played by their mothers. He suggested that the strength of the faculty be increased. He said that the department has changed the format/pattern of question paper for the 10th Exam and the blueprints had been circulated to all the schools.  Crisis management should not occur and this process has to be a continuous one from day one.  Each and every teacher should feel that they are being watched and every teacher should develop a constructive competitive nature.  They should find out the cause contributing the debacle to be examined. He said that schools of Jayanagar constituency should be a model to other parts of Bangalore. While speaking about Revaluation of papers he said that out of the 7 lakhs students appeared for the 2009 exam, 4 lakhs students failed and 20000 students applied for revaluation out of which nearly 2000 students got passing marks.  It was shocking to learn that there were students who got 80% after re valuation.  This was due to the careless attitude of several teachers, which should be stopped.  He suggested teachers to teach the students how to answer question papers with clarity.  Even though the students know the subject, they were unable to write it on the answer paper clearly.  A comprehensive programme should be chalked out during the remaining period of 4 months by a) completing those portions/subject which are easy b) moderately difficult portions to be taken up next and finally c) Difficult portions to be completed at the end.
Dr. S. Srikantaswamy, head of Christ University, thanked Sri.B.N. Vijayakumar, MLA for initiating this programme to improve the quality of results.
He also said a database should be prepared to know the performance of students for the last three years. He quoted the example of a High School at B. Narayanapura and Model High school of Chamarajpet where the performance of the students improved considerably by initiating suitable steps.
Dr. K. Shesha Murthy, Head of Department, Computer Division, Vijaya Pre-university College,Jayanagar, in his address said very few individuals opt for teacher's profession by choice. Others by compulsion and they generally lack motivation, lack of leadership qualities and have lesser capability. If we work collectively and contribute for this cause better results could be achieved by adopting continuous programme.
Abhirudigagi has been organizing many such awareness programmes such as Rain Harvesting, Presentation of Metro Rail Projects and so on.
