Walk to normalcy 48 hours after knee transplant!

How much time does it take for a person who has undergone a knee transplant, to walk normally? Weeks, probably more than a month? Welcome to Khincha Orthopaedic Centre in Basavanagudi, where people undergo joint replacement, and are able to sit up in four hours, walk in two days, and climb stairs by the fourth day of the operation.

Dr HP Khincha, a specialist in joint replacement and arthroscopic surgery explains the new procedure: "It is a computer-assisted surgical replacement of joints and it helps in accurate ligament balancing and monitors/controls errors. The incision made is small and so the patient takes very little time to get on his feet."

The treatment called Surface Replacement Surgery allows the patient to undergo knee replacement on both legs simultaneously. This helps in correcting knees with just one visit to the hospital, drastically cutting your medical costs. The procedure makes use of knee transplants that provide for rotational motion of the limbs as well.

The new treatment is used for treating rheumatoid arthritis, osteo arthritis and avascular necrosis of the hip, a condition that occurs due to lack of blood flow to the hips. It is also used for removing tumours in bones.

Recently, Dr Khincha performed a corrective surgery for an old fracture and a knee joint replacement surgery on Governor T.N. Chaturvedi.

More and more people are becoming susceptible to arthritis, including the young. The reasons, said Dr Khincha, are "sedentary lifestyle, food habits, working conditions and rise in the number of accidents."

(Dr Khincha is also a consultant at Sagar Apollo Hospital,
Jayanagar and Lakeside Medical Centre, Ulsoor.
