Record angioplasty operations conducted free

The biggest ever Angioplasty with Stent workshop in the country was held at Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research from Aug 10-14, 2009.
Around 150 poor patients underwent angioplasty a in record span of five days, and Stents worth Rs 1.2 crore were given away free of cost to the patients.
Dr. Govindaraju Subramani Heart Foundation, Wisconsin USA, contributed Rs.l.2 crores towards the workshop, which was a milestone for Sri Jayadeva Institute.
Dr. G. Subramani the Chairman of the Heart foundation and Dr. Devaraj are practicing cardiologists in USA. Dr. C.N.Manjunath, Director, SJICR and his team of cardiologists conducted the procedure successfully.
Those treated included poor farmers, daily wage laborers, footpath vendors and senior citizens.
Talking to TWB, Dr. Manjunath said heart attack related diseases are steadily increasing both in rural and urban areas and across rich/poor sections of society. The youngest person to be treated at the workshop was 24 years old laborers, while 40% of patients were below 50 of age, he pointed out. Smoking, high cholesterol, Hypertension and diabetes were the main risk factors.
At the valedictory function held on the concluding day at Jayadeva Institute's new Auditorium, 100 patients were discharged while the remaining 50 patients will be discharged on Sunday.
Sri. Ramachandra Gowda, Medical Education & Health Minister and Sri. V. Umesh, Secretary, Medical Education, presided over the valedictory.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Manjunath said it is always better to keep blood sugar, body weight, cholesterol, blood pressure on the lower side. He advised the people to take blood thinning medicines such as Aspirin and Clopidogrel life long. If these medicines are stopped for more than 3 days, there is a high possibility of heart attack due to clotting of blood inside the stented artery, he said.
Dr. G. Subramani, USA has set role model for the other NRI Doctors by generously contributing to the workshop, he said.
The workshop has been conducted by Jayadeva Institute for the third successive year.
