Mega Volley Ball Championship for School Boys and Girls
Over two hundred teams took part in the recently held XXV Soundarya Cup for Smt Yeshodhamma Memorial Trophy Volley Ball Championship for School Boys and Girls (under 14 years and 17 years ) under the auspices of Karnataka Volley Ball Association (R) and Bangalore City District Volley Ball Association (R) organised by the Spikers Youth Sports Club, Jayanagar. This was their XXV consecutive championship event.
The event is a big opportunity to tap young talented volleyball players. National level players of yester years have been coopted to encourage students to take up volleyball as a serious sport.
The club also proposes to educate the selected trainees in the technical aspects of the game as well as offer specialized coaching.
The club started this event way back in 1984 with only 3 teams in high school girls section and later they conducted women’s tournament on state level basis along with high school girls tournament. In 1986 they started the championship for boys and girls under 14 years and under17 years at Corporation playground, Jayanagar.
As the club grew in prominence, the number of teams taking part in their events also grew, necessitating the shifting of the event to the present Jayanagar Corporation Stadium.
Soundarya Arts Propietor Sri T.M.Gowda sponsored the winner’s rolling trophy of Soundarya Cup. The Take away trophy for all the 16 teams was sponsored by Sri K. Nanda Kumar, General Secretary, Karnataka Volley Ball Association and Joint Secretary, Volley Ball Federation of India and Chairman, Organising Committee of this championship in fond memory of his mother Smt Yeshodamma. Now the championship is known as Soundarya Cup for Yeshodamma Memorial.
In high school boys section 108 were divided into 4 pools. The teams played in a league round and one team from each pool emerged to play super league and 1st to 4th position were declared on the basis of their performance in the super league matches.
In high School girls and higher primary boys 36 teams each participated and in higher primary girls 16 teams participated who played league matches in their pool and one team in each pool advanced to the super league and 1 to 4 position were decided in their performance.
This championship was declared open by Sri Vijaya Kumar MLA, Jayanagar and inaugurated by Sri K. Govindaraj President Karnataka Olympic Association. the Guests Of Honour were Sri N. Nagaraju, Ex Councillor BBMP and Member BDA., Chief Patron Organizing Committee of this Championship. Sri Somashekar Ex- Councillor BBMP. Chennagiri, General secretary BJP, Kishore Joseph, Publisher, This Week Bangalore and Vice Chairman Organizing Committee Sri Chennagiri, General Secretary BJP., Sri T M Gowda Patron Organizing Committee and Sri A Umesh Organizing Seretary presided.
Free food and snacks were served to all the Players, Managers and Officials on all the three days. In High School And Primary Schools, Boys and Girls section Prizes were awarded to the Winners, Runners, First Runner up and Second Runner up with Rolling Cups and Take Away Trophies and Individual Trophies. Sports Kit and Medals were also awarded to them. Best Players of the Tournament were awarded with Track Suits in all categories.
In High School Boys Winners were Shantiniketan High School, Mico Layout, Carmel Convent, Padmanabha Nagar were Runners up, A V Education Society J P Nagar were I Runner up and Shntiniketan, Bilek hally were II Runner up.
In High School Girls under 17 years Stella Marys Malleshwaram Were Winners, Carmel Convent, Jayanagar were Runners up, R. V. Jayanagar were I Runners up, Mahilla Seva Samaja, BAsavanagudi, were II Runners up.
In Higher Primary School Boys Under 14 years Shantinikean were Winners, A V Education Society J P Nagar, Runners up, St. Joseph’s Briand Square, Chamarajpet were I Runners up and Kumarans Children Home, T R Nagar were II Runners up.

In Higher Primary School Girls under 14years Mahilla Seva Samaja, Basavanagudi, Winners, Carmel Convent, Jayanagar, Runners up, I Runners up were Sree Rama Vidyalaya Jayanagar and II Runners up were Stella Marys, Malleswaram.
Individual Prizes were awarded to the best Players in all the age groups for both Boys and Girls.
At the Valedictory address K Chandrashekar, Asst. Commissioner of Police Traffic West Zone and T Ramappa Circle Inspector of Police K G Halli, distributed the prizes. T M Gowda and Sri Indudhar were present on the occasion.
Sports Loving philanthropists M Krishnappa., Hon’ble MLA Bangalore South Constituency, Sri Mallikarjun Jayanagar, Sangathi Venkatesh, Eskimos, J Cubez, J M Enterprises helped in organizing this tournament .
Sri N Nagaraju, Ex Councilor BBMP and Member BDA., Chief Patron Organizing Committee donated the individual prizes (Sports Kits) . He has been doing this for the past 8 years. T Shirts and caps were sponsored by Eskimos, J Cubez, J M Enterprises for Team Managers, Team coaches, Officials, P T Teachers and Guests.
The entire preliminary preparations of the above championship was monitored by Chief Mentor Sri B N Vijaya Kumar, MLA Jayanagar, Chief Patron SRI N Nagaraju Ex - Councilor BBMP and Member BDA., and Sri K Nanda Kumar Chairman Organizing Committee personally. Coordinated by Sri A Umesh.
