Conversations About Living
"Indians are facing unprecedented stress - in the space of a few years, everything around us has changed, as the forces of materialism have dismantled the less hectic and more peaceful life we were used to. India has the highest suicide rate in the world, more than 10 times in the west. And for every suicide, there are a thousand other people suffering in silence, leading lives of quiet desperation. But we don't have to suffer. We can live stress free happy lives, using a combination of western psychology and eastern approaches to consciousness."
So says Dr Shyam Bhat MD, a doctor from Bangalore, who has returned to the city after spending 13 years in England and America. Dr Bhat, a physician and neuropsychiatrist, specializes in Integrative Medicine, a speciality that combines western medicine and psychology with techniques from Yoga, meditation and even Zen and Vedanta philosophy.
"Only after living abroad, did I begin to appreciate Indian culture and philosophy even more. I realized that the best path to health and wellness, of mind, body and spirit, is to combine western science and eastern wisdom."
With a view to decreasing stress in Bangalore, and in order to facilitate personal growth, Dr Bhat has founded an organization called, Nirvikalpa: The Center for Human Potential. He has already been joined by like minded people - Somil Mittal, a computer engineer, left his thriving steel business to join Nirvikalpa. Kalyan Ramamurthy, a veteran of the BPO industry has also joined the endeavor.

"I want to contribute to the growth of modern India, and this is a cause that I am passionate about, as a professional who was dealing with stress," says Mittal, who now heads operations at Nirvikalpa.
As part of its not for profit activities, Nirvikalpa is conducting a series of free public workshops and talks, called, "Conversations About Living."
"The talks focus on different aspects of living - they combine spiritual insights with hard facts from western science. If people leave the talks feeling that they have a different perspective, a renewed sense of joy and purpose, along with tools and insights to lead their best possible lives, then we have achieved our purpose," says Dr Bhat.
The next talk, entitled, "The Nature of Bliss: Happiness through Yoga Psychology" is being held at the Rotary House of Learning, 11 Promenade Road, Opp. Coles Park on Monday, 15th June at 6pm.
