Singh is King on the World Wide Web
Dr. Manmohan Singh and politics seem to be the flavor of the season with Internet users
IPL news, Bollywood songs, celebrity images and finance related information were the most searched for items till recently on Guruji.com. But that seems passé now. According to Guruji.com, they have witnessed a change in the attitude of Internet users. The generation which was once mostly about celebrities and sports, want to be more involved in the developmental progress of the country. This is evident as the rage in search trends has changed from being merely feature-centric to a more political theme. According to Guruji.com, the most searched for term in the recent past has been our mild mannered Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. Other keywords which were also frequently searched for include UPA, NDA, Congress, Sonia Gandhi, BJP etc. The second most searched for personality happened to be exuberant Rahul Gandhi.
Politics has taken a forefront in the internet search department during this year's elections. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to the recent US Presidential elections, this election has largely been an online election campaign. Political parties saw the Internet as a medium to effectively engage with the youth of this country. By being able to deliver India specific search results to users, Guruji.com has proved to be nothing less than a dream come true for not only students who want to know more about Indian politics, but also voters who were still indecisive about which party they would like to vote for. Guruji.com, compared to any other site, was the ideal site for "Indian" political search, due to its focus on India specific content.
"Though Guruji Music Search still remains our volume driver, we have witnessed an exponential increase in search terms related to the recent elections and political parties. We saw this trend becoming stronger on our search engine as the D-day came closer," observed Anurag Dod, CEO of Guruji.com. "Besides being used prominently during the election phase, we are now seeing an increase in traffic to our Finance search vertical. This could probably be because of investors' interest in whether the Congress party's victory will have a positive change in the stock market as the last few days have shown".
Another interesting trend is that people are not just looking for substantial data on parties, their policies, and the current government, but there were other things besides the obvious. For example, when the Congress made 'Jai Ho', its official song for these elections, its supporters could not get enough of this track from the movie, 'Slumdog Millionaire'. The song also happened to be the most searched for song on Guruji Music. Another interesting initiative taken by Guruji.com for these elections was powering a non-profit site called nocriminals.org. This site had a database on the criminal records of politicians and Guruji.com augmented this data by providing news results related to those politicians and their crimes. This further helped voters in deciding who was more deserving of their precious vote. These trends do show a tangential deviation from the usual mindset of urban Internet users and it is heartening to observe that the youth of today does not to be a part of the India story.
