SBM wins Kabaddi tournament

SBM Kabaddi team won the Kabaddi tournament for State Amateurs with a thumping win (19/3) against HAL in the finals held in Jayanagar. They won a cash prizxe of Rs 20,000 while the runner-up was awarded Rs 12,500/-. The number three and number four losing semi-finalists won prizes of Rs 5,000/- and Rs 1,500/-. Other prize winners were: Best Catcher - Gopal (Hoody's) who was given a wet grinder; Best Rider - Palaniswami, HAL and Best All Rounder - Nagaraj Nayak, SBM, both of whom won a DVD player.
The 4-day tournament was organised by Chamundeshwari Kabaddi Club, Jayanagar from Dec 25-28, 2008 to commemorate former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpyee's 84th birthday. The venue at Chamundeshwari Ground, 18th Main, 4th 'T' Block, Jayanagar was choc a bloc with thousands of Kabaddi enthusiasts thronging the flood-lit event, that was inaugurated by Jayanagar MLA, BN Vijaykumar. Former corporators B Somashekar and CK Ramamurthy presided. Over 24 teams took part in the tournament such as SBM, HMT, Karnataka State Police, HAL, CIL, Hoody's Sports Club and Basavanagudi Kabaddi Club.
Kabaddi internationals BC Ramesh, BC Suresh and Argma Awadi from SBM were the star attraction. Teams from HAL, Hoody's Club, SBM and BEL reached the last four stage.
Referees from Karnataka State Amateur Kabaddi Association judged the match under the guidance of Mr. Narasimha Shetty, organizing secretary. The chief guest for the finals was Sri. R. Ashok, Transport Minister, a keen Kabaddi enthusiast and one time player, and BN Vijaykumar, Jayanagar MLA. Former corporator B. Somashekar, Lakshmikanth, Bangalore city secretary BJP, Shivappa, and T. Krishna were present.
