BBMP educates residents

Creating Wealth from Waste

BBMP with the initiative of Jayanagar MLA BN Vijaykumar organized a cleaning camp at JS Complex, 4th Block, in association with the Centre for Public Policy of Indian Institute of Management. Dr Kumar, MOH, BBMP appealed to the shopkeepers to have their own dustbins in their shops and put in the mobile dustbin cart when it comes to them. BBMP officials, traffic police and law enforcement police, were also at hand to gain firsthand knowledge of the problems of the shopkeepers and how to maintain litter-free environment in the commercial hubs of Jayanagar.
BBMP officials stated that the garbage collectors would work on two shift basis and the violators or those found littering or dumping garbage in unauthorised places, will be imposed a spot fine, whether they were shopkeepers, shoppers or pedestrians.
The authorities had put up banners all around the Complex to educate and encourage the people to maintain cleanliness and know about waste management systems.
One of the residents pointed out that the RTO was using the basement of the Puttanna Chitra Mandira to park all seized vehicles. The MLA directed the concerned to evict the cars and use the space exclusively for car parking. He also agreed to a suggestion to relocate the big transformer at the JS Complex to a more suitable place as it was hampering smooth pedestrian movement. On the problem of footpath vegetable vendors, he stated they would be shifted to behind the Complex, and the road leading to the entrance of the Complex would be widened for more pedestrian space.
According to Dr Kumar, the BBMP has mopped up Rs 40,000/- worth fine in one week for violations under KMC Act, such as use of unauthorized banners, littering, throwing plastic covers on roads.
Later, the BBMP distributed informative handouts to the people to create awareness about how wealth can be created out of waste and the citizens' responsibility to keep Jayanagar clean and green.
