Property Taxes Ordinance a Mockery

The recent ordinance brought in by the Government regarding property taxes in BBMP area and the subsequent draft notification of rules makes a mockery of the commitments given by the Government during the public meeting held in Ravindra Kalakshetra on July 15.

To recall, the Government had promised to effect a nominal increase of 10 to 15% over the taxes that was being paid under the earlier system and also to allow depreciation for the period 2001 - 2008 so that the net increase in tax would be around  8% .

Further the Government promised to hold PUBLIC HEARINGS at the zonal level instead of at the Assembly constituency level as demanded by us, before bringing in a comprehensive tax legislation.

Instead the Government in its ordinance and the notification of draft rules has introduced a new concept called "Unit Area Value" for each zone without specifying the details of these zones and the Unit area values for these zones. There is absolutely no link between the old values and the new proposal.

The Citizens Action Forum (CAF) is organizing a public meeting in association with the Institution of Engineers, India, Karnataka chapter  at  the  Institution  of  Engineers  Auditorium,  Dr. B R Ambedkar Veedhi, Bangalore on Saturday, the 29th Nov 2008  between  2.00 pm and 5.30 pm . A majority of the MLAs from Bangalore will take part in the meeting.
