DAISY Enlighten Lives
As a pilot project, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan will try out new technology to make information easily accessible to the visually challenged, in two educational blocks in Karnataka, said G. Selvakumar, State Project Director of SSA. Speaking at a seminar on Digital Accessible Information System (Daisy), a technology that helps the visually challenged read text, Mr. Selvakumar said that technology can play a crucial role in ensuring access to quality education to all, especially the physically challenged.
He said that Karnataka has 1.32 lakh physically challenged children in the age group of six to 14, of whom 17,700 are visually challenged.
Dipendra Manocha, President of DAISY Forum of India spoke about the DAISY technology and demonstrated the benefits of the technology.
Mahantesh G. Kivadasannavar, Managing Trustee of Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, said that Daisy technology provides a single-source document in several accessible formats, such as talking book, large print book and Braille book.
Ganesh Prasad S, Director – Systems & Processes of Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled emphasized the need for collaborations amongst the NGOs, Government, Corporate and other stake holders in order to reach the benefits of this technology to the actual end users.
