Rotary Club of Bangalore is 75 years young!
75 years of gilt edged service to the community by the Rotary Club of Bangalore, a premium club in the District and the second largest club in India, initiated its Platinum Jubilee Celebrations in a grandiloquent manner, earlier this week by announcing week long celebrations titled "Rotary Habba".
In recognition of its service and contribution to the Community over seven decades, and in commemoration of this historic event, the Chief Post Master General, Mr. M. P. Rajan, IPS, released a FIRST DAY COVER at the Rotary House of Friendship, Bangalore. M. P. Rajan said "Rotary, the largest non profit Service Organisation, has been striving for a better society through various projects. My hearty congratulations to Rotary Club of Bangalore, stepping into its 75th year, which by itself is a major achievement. "
The inauguration of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations is an event in the history of the club. Announcing the start of Platinum Jubilee year, President, Vijayakumar said, "While celebrating this historic landmark, the Rotary Club of Bangalore would like to re-dedicate itself to the service of the community and make the world around us a little better, and in the process fulfill aspirations and make DREAMS REAL". Elaborating on the program slated for Rotary Habba, he added that "there will be various programmes for the whole week like Charter Nite Celebrations, Seminar on Social Responsibility, Mega Health Camp, Inter-School painting competition, and major fundraiser programme "Sacred Rivers" a Jugalbandi by the renowned Gundecha brothers" and other nationally accredited musicians.
The Seminar on Social Responsibility will have the key note address by Sri. Suresh P. Prabhu - Member of Parliament and other eminent speakers deliberating on topics of Philanthropy, Community Service, Corporate Social Responsibility, Media, NGO's and the Government
A Mega Health Camp by Women's Empowerment Committee is conducting a Cancer detection camp and Hemoglobin check in association with Kidwai Memorial Hospital on October 21, at Al Azhar School. 1st cross, 3rd Main Road, Padrayanapura, off Mysore Road, Bangalore
The committee has decided to undertake the task of creating awareness amongst citizens of Karnataka, on the recent Domestic Violence Act which was passed in 2006 by the Indian Government, and spreading awareness about issues related to Domestic Violence amongst rural and urban women about the Act, passing information of the law and measures for its implementation to NGOs and other support groups and a helpline for people in distress.

Rotary Club of Bangalore, from the days of 1934 to 2008, is marching through its Platinum Jubilee year, with commendable service to communities and to the city of Bangalore, promoting friendship, fellowship and goodwill, through its spread and reach. Rotary Club of Bangalore and its dedicated members are quick to intervene and assist, whether it is rehabilitation after a civil war, or tsunami like calamities, or epidemics that have regularly claimed lives in different parts of the world.
Notable among such programmes is the collective worldwide effort Rotary and its members have made, year after year, with millions of dollars in support, to successfully eradicate Polio, and are pretty close to making the world 'POLIO FREE'. It has constantly stepped in to complement and support massive programmes in the field of basic education, infrastructure for economically weaker segments and schools, need based scholarships, health and family welfare, vocational training for the underprivileged, and basic amenities like food, shelter, drinking water, and micro credit for self supporting daily wage earners, and many such rehabilitation and socio economic programmes.
The Rotary Club of Bangalore has a long history of public service and laudable contributions to society and to the community. Its illustrious members include the late Homi J. Bhabha, the renowned scientist, Padma Bhushan MS Thacker, Dr. M. N. Mahadevan, to name a few.
From its inception in 1934 and since its first project of commissioning an X- Ray centre at the Victoria Hospital in the year 1939, the Club has executed hundreds of projects worth crores of rupees, over the last 75 years, winning public acclaim and support from its 250 members.
Noteworthy among them are the Rotary TTK Blood Bank that renders unparalleled service by distributing over 20000 units of well tested and rigidly screened blood and blood products every year, and the school at Nagadevanahalli which are fine examples of well managed NGO -Industry partnerships that fill voids in society, and offer education solutions for the underprivileged and the weaker segments.
Cancer Detection Camp
The Rotary Club of Bangalore's Womens Empowerment Committee, on the occasion of Platinum Jubilee initiative, held a Cancer Detection and Awareness Camp in Padarayanapura, in association with Kidwai Memorial Hospital, where 600 persons, both men and women gathered together to hear Doctors from Department Community Medicine, Kidwai Memorial Hospital, talk about the dreaded disease, its causes and treatment. The loudspeakers at the nearby mosque invited men and women of the neighbourhood to attend this Mega Cancer Detection Camp. Women attended with their children and patiently sat through the hour long talk. Men had taken time off from their work to be present. Dr. Ibrahim, Head of Community Medicine, Kidwai Memorial hospital, and other doctors on the team, addressed the group, in simple language, and explained about the ill effects of tobacco chewing, smoking and talked about signs of various types of cancers to be noted. He said, early detection and treatment of this disease could have positive results.
Inspired by the talk people rushed towards the doctors tables anxious to be checked up. A routine physical examination was conducted, along with blood grouping, check for oral cancers, cervical screening and breast cancer. Men and women who needed a more detailed check were presented a card of Kidwai Memorial hospital with reference to Doctors and department for further check. Couple of serious cases were detected and immediate attention was provided by Kidwai. They were assured that all these treatments would be free of cost or paid for by Humane Touch, an NGO who mobilised people and had organised the camp in their premises.
Musical concert: The Rotary Club of Bangalore is also organizing a concert 'Sacred Rivers' at Chowdaiah Memorial Hall on October 25, 2008 at 6.15 pm. The funds raised through this will be utilised for expanding the Nagadevanahally school, to build a school for 200 children at Sakalvara in Anekal taluk and for Wheelchair Olympics to be held in 2009. The participating artists in the concert are Gundecha brothers- Umakant and Ramakant, Sri Ganesh Rajagopalan, Sri Debashish Bhattacharya, Sri Akhilesh Gundecha, Sri Patri Satish Kumar, Sri Giridhar Udupa, Sri Subasish Bhattacharya.
Sacred Rivers is a musical extravanza, with visuals of six sacred rivers of India, their legends and their present condition. The program explores the symbiosis between the rivers, our life and culture. Sacred Rivers hopes to create an awareness of the precious role of rivers in our lives and expects to re-kindle respect and reverence for our sacred waters. This evening is conceptualised by Heritage- a charitable trust involved in the dissemination and promotion of Indian Heritage, Art and Culture besides actively involving in community service projects.
