Indo German School, its fund crunch
- By Keshu Namboodiri
The Integrated School in HAL 2nd stage, near hotel Leela palace is run in a car shed. The students are mainly middle and lower middle class background. With over fifty students studying in kindergarten classes. The school has silently imparted knowledge for fifteen years under the able administration of Mrs. Susheela Basvanderan who takes care of the day to day activities of the school.
Indo German School is run by a trust comprising of six members. Its financiers are taken care by the members with the Basvandra's taking the bulk of the responsibilities. The school could not expand in the last fifteen years of existence due to shortage of funds. The school is special in the sense that it has integrated special children with the normal. The special children have had an opportunity to interact normally and in the process improved their mindset. The results from the school are very encouraging and students have moved to better known schools without any problem. They recently won a gold medal in a talents search sponsored by book sellers organized at the national level. The award was presented to them at Kottayam recently.
The school wants to provide better opportunities to the special students. They have plans to set up a vocational training centre for which they have been allotted land near NGEF. The trust also plans to set up an old age home alongside.
The school employs good teachers and has restricted their intake so that individual care can be given to the students. Susheela Basvandran and her doctor husband have been making strong attempts to raise funds through donations, but their success has been limited to a few thousand rupees. The Basvandra's hold promise for the underprivileged. But the higher end of the society can pitch in with their bit to make social service fruitful. Income tax rebate under 80 G can be availed for donations. Contact: 25278964.
