Dated: 19th Oct 2005

Soft-spoken, humble, and pious, AR Rahman is the kind who prefers to let his music do the talking, as TW’s publisher Kishore Joseph discovered. Excerpts from the interview:

TW: If you have to choose a profession other than music in your next birth, what would it be?
ARR: I really wouldn’t know what to choose.

TW: Do you like the remixes of songs composed by you?
ARR: Certainly not!

TW: Remixes encourage copycats in music and harm originality in music in the long run. Do you agree?
ARR: It depends on each individual’s taste. Ultimately, it’s all about using one’s talents to entertain music lovers – whether it is through remix or their own tunes.

TW: For your fans the world over it is extremely difficult to pick the most loved song of yours. If you had to pick the all-time best 3 songs, which would they be?
ARR: It is very difficult to choose because I put the same amount of effort for each and every song.

TW: What are you working on right now? And which is the one you are looking forward to the most?
ARR: Right now I have signed up for Rajnikanth’s next movie, Ramakrishna, apart from a few Hindi films.

TW: Why do you prefer working in the night?
ARR: (smiles) It’s not the case always, though I prefer to work during night.

TW: It is said you take an unusually long time on your compositions? Are you still a perfectionist and do not compromise on the time taken till you are totally satisfied with your work?
ARR: That’s my style and way of working.

TW: What is your advice to aspiring musicians?
ARR: (smiles) You media people are the best when it comes to giving advice!

TW: After AR Rahman, who? Who among the present crop of music directors are best equipped to take on your mantle, in your view?
ARR: No comments.

TW: Have you signed up any Kannada film?
ARR: Presently, I am working more on Hindi and Tamil films, but if I get a good theme I would definitely take it up.

TW: For your debut film, Roja, you were paid Rs 25,000. How much do you charge per film now?
ARR: (smiles) Sorry, that’s for you to find out!
