Greenwood High Girls’ team clinchesVidyashilp Academy Inter-school chess championship title

Bangalore,16th August,2012: The students of Greenwood High have made their alma mater proud. The girl’s team of Greenwood High International School won the inter-school chess title in a competition organized by the Vidyashilp Academy at their school campus on 23rd & 24th of July, 2012. Of the six rounds that comprised the competition, the girls scored a total of 21 points clinching the title for themselves. The students of Greenwood High were coached by Mr. Somanath K.

NiruAgarwal, Director, Greenwood High said, “The children have done us proud at the inter-school level. Their success is an affirmation of our good intentions in introducing chess into the school curriculum.” Chess is a part of the school’s curriculum and it began on a very small scale at Greenwood High’s primary section in Koramangala around 4 years ago.

 The immense response it got prompted Greenwood High to introduce the curriculum at the main school soon enough .Today, the school has an entire classroom dedicated to chess where 15 tables can seat 30 students playing the game at one go. Students are divided into batches according to their age group with 8-14 years being in one group and 14-17 years forming the senior group. A weekly time table has been charted out for the entire school with each division getting one hour a week dedicated to playing thegame. The children’s games are analyzed and graded and included as part of their scholastic evaluation.

 In the boys section, Greenwood High International School scored 15.5 points and secured the third position.

Speaking on the success of his students, Aloysius D’mello, Principal, Greenwood High said, “Besides the mental agility and ability to strategize, success victories at the inter-school level serve as a great boost to our students who gain more confidence in facing tough competition. They are indirectly preparing for the competitive lives they have ahead.”
